Brooklyn Bridge, Connector Of Two Cities

Brooklyn Bridge is considered as one of the greatest engineering structures of 19th century. Situated in New York, this bridge is an ultimate American pride and most popular landmark for New Yorkers. Starting in 1869, it took total fourteen years to complete this bridge. Constructed over the East River, it has connected Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bridge is actually a suspension bridge. There are two giant towers holding the bridge with lots of cables. Distance between the towers is 486 meters (1595.5 feet). The length of the whole bridge is 1.8 km (5989 feet). The highest tower is 84 meters (276 feet) high, it has beautiful Gothic-styled arches. When the bridge was made, this towers were only few of the tallest man-made structures in the city.

To help people cross the bridge on foot and to enjoy the magnificent views of the towers and Brooklyn, Manhattans’ skyline, an elevated walkway had been build over the main road level. Millions of people come to this bridge every year to enjoy the magnificent views visible from this pavements.

The creator of Brooklyn Bridge, German-born civil engineer John Roebling once commented that this bridge will one day become an official historic monument of United States just for these towers. Fulfilling his dream, Brooklyn Bridge was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

There is an interesting culture being practiced for years in a section of this bridge. Like many cities in Europe, love couples of New York attach locks to the bridge writing their names, dates & others and throw the keys in East River. It’s a symbol of their eternal love, hoping they will be always attached with each other forever and no key will be found to break their relation.

The Brooklyn Bridge is also well-known for becoming backgrounds in various popular movie scenes. Parts of ‘Godzilla’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘I am Legend’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘It Happened in Brooklyn’, ‘Kate & Leopold’, ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘Annie Hall’ were shoot here. Many TV series like ‘CSY:NY’ has also used this bridge as subject.
